About Towson University

Towson University, Towson or TU for short, is an American public university located in Towson, which is an unincorporated community and a census-designated place in Baltimore County, in the US state of Maryland. It is the 2nd most populated unincorporated county seat in USA, being the county seat of Baltimore County, having a population estimated at a number of more than 50 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census.


TU was founded by the Maryland Legislature and adopted its current name in 1865, first starting as a training school for teachers in Baltimore, expanding into the 4-year degree granting institution known today, which consists of 8 colleges and has an enrollment of more than 20 000 students. It is the 2nd largest public university in Maryland, still producing the largest number of teachers than any other university in the state.


The university was ranked by the U.S. News & World Report 8th in the Public Universities-Master’s (North) category for its 2010 America’s Best Colleges issue, Forbes magazine including it in its 2009 list of the top 100 public colleges and universities in USA. According to Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine, TU is also one of the top 100 best values in public colleges for the 2008-2009 academic year.


Towson is accredited is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and the Maryland State Department of Education, offering its students 64 undergraduate majors, 37 master’s degree programs and 4 doctoral programs, including a gerontology program, which is one of only 100 such undergraduate programs offered in the States.


The athletic teams from Towson University are known as the Towson Tigers, formerly known as the Towson College Knights, who compete in the Colonial Athletic Association, the university having 18 Division I athletic teams, of which 11 are for women and 7 are for men. TU is particularly known for its 11 time National Champion Dance Team, who won their 11th consecutive title in April 2009. The university is also known for the men’s lacrosse team, which is nationally known for their regularly appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
